Budleigh Salterton Under-16s bagged a point from a 1-1 draw at Elmore when the pair met in Tiverton to play an Exeter and District Youth League Division One game, writes SpursTom.

On a blustery and showery morning, the young Robins made a positive start, but it was Elmore who took the lead, scoring with their first attack!

A ball, crossed from the right went across the box where it was contested by the tracking back Ryan Fell and the Elmore left-sided midfielder. Neither player reached the ball, which went behind for a goal-kick, only for the referee to give a penalty as both players fell to the floor!

The spot kick was duly rifled home, but the sense of ‘injustice’ drew a terrific response from Budleigh, who began to make great progress, particularly through the excellent free-kick deliveries from Rory Craib. It was from a set-piece, delivered by Ryan Davis, that Matt Shaw-Smith headed past the home glovesman.

The second half saw a competitive game all too often interrupted by the referee’s whistle, but Budleigh almost won it at the death when a powerful Will White shot was kept out by the goalkeeper’s feet.

In what was a solid team performance, the Budleigh Man of the Match award went to central midfielder Ryan Daffin.
