Millwey Rise’s hunt for a first win of the Macron League Division Four campaign goes on after they were beaten 2-1 by visiting Winkleigh, writes Dick Sturch.
The visitors took a 10th minute lead with a header that eluded the outstretched arms of Brett Garner in the home goal.
Rise, with some astute passing by midfielder Sam Turner and wing man Dave Bridges, went close a number of times while, at the other end of the pitch, Garner made a superb save to deny Winkleigh a second.
Parity was restored just before the break with Bridges the goal scorer. Early in the second half Matt Lewis saw a header crash against the bar before Winkleigh regained the lead with another close-range powerful header.
As Rise pressed for an equaliser, Ty Allen’s header skimmed the top of the bar and then Lewis saw a shot superbly turned around the post by the Winkleigh keeper.
Haydn Lewis out wide must have found life frustrating, when, many times having moved into open space, his presence was ignored.
Brother Matt, who is sponsored by Millman Hall Ltd, was certainly the Rise Man of the Match for his performance of unstinting effort and a number of near things in terms of goal attempts.
Millwey Rise Reserves shared four goals with hosts Exmouth Town thirds.
What was a young Rise team played very well to hold a 2-0 half-time lead over a strong home side.
Mark Pike scored both the Rise goals. However, Rise were forced to settle for a point after the home side struck twice in quick succession, midway through the second half.
In what was an all-round excellent team effort, the Rise Man of the Match award went to Matt Rockett, who is sponsored by Axminster Printing Co, and who was outstanding at the heart of the Rise defence.
On Saturday (October 13), Rise 1st team are at Alphington (3pm) while the second team entertain Devon Yeoman Reserves at Cloakham Lawns (3pm).
