Exmouth netball side Gazelles are growing in confidence week by week and were looking forward to their first encounter against Cougars, an experienced outfit and one of the top local netball teams, writes Hayley Taylor.

Gazelles made a promising start, keeping pace with Cougars for the first half of the opening quarter.

However, once Cougars settled into the contest they began to punish a number of unforced errors by the Gazelles and, at the end of the first quarter, Cougars led 12-4.

In the second quarter, Gazelles found it difficult getting the ball into their shooters, with much of this down to the exceptional work of Shelly Stammers in the opposition defence! With Stammers ‘in charge’ Cougars scored on a regular basis at the other end of the court to lead 21-6 at half time.

Gazelles have the luxury of a good sized squad and team changes going into the third quarter produced a steadier flow down court and around the circle increasing opportunities for the shooters with Alison Horton scoring some spectacular goals!

Meg Ford, playing at WD for gazelles, was another to impress as she worked tirelessly producing many a crucial interception and continually offering great support. Her all-round game saw her deservedly win the Gazelles Player of the Match award.

The third quarter had been a good one for Gazelles and the final quarter began with them trailing 31-12.

In the final quarter Gazelles’ speedster Sophie Minter, covered every square inch of the court. However, despite some excellent shooting by Charlie Baker and Rhian Rose, the gap between the sides was always too much to make up and the final whistle blew with Cougars the deserved 43-18 winners. However, the final score perhaps did not reflect the overall contribution Gazelle’s made to a terrific contest.
