The past few weeks have been exciting ones at Lympstone dojo.
Students Tom Salt and Oliver Roper, together with Katherine and Alexandra Dent, competed at the South West Championships, held in late November at Uffculme in Mid Devon.
Sensei Marianne Fox said: “Tom, Katherine and Alexandra, who all came up against eventual medal winners, showed great courage and determination, while Oliver got through to the children’s black and brown belt kata (sequence of moves), and took fourth place, sharing the podium with some of the KUGB (Karate Union of Great Britain) England squad members!”
She continued: “Special mentions must also go to a couple of our honorary members. Sensei Josh took third place in men’s black and brown belt kata, and Alice took gold in the ladies’ black and brown belt kata and joint third in the ladies’ kumite (fighting).
● The first Saturday of December saw honorary club member Sue and Sensei Marianne travel to Egham where Sue graded for her Nidan (2nd Dan Black belt) under chief instructor Andy Sherry and the legendary Frank Brennan. Sensei Marianne Fox says: “Sue is an incredible role model to us all at Lympstone. She had trained as much as five times a week prior to the journey to Egham.”
The second weekend of December saw students and instructors from the Lympstone dojo travel to Exeter and Tiverton to complete their final grading of the year under the watchful eye of KUGB’s chief instuctor Andy Sherry Sensei 9th Dan. Students impressed Sensei Sherry with some outstanding work. In terms of the students’ success, it was as follows: Olive Wynn - orange belt (9th kyu); Bernie Bowers - red belt (8th kyu); Katherine Dent - yellow belt (7th kyu); Alexandra Dent - yellow belt (7th kyu); Colin Dent - green belt (6th kyu); Alex Roper - green belt (6th kyu); Jake Langdon - green belt (6th kyu); Isobel Harrison - purple white stripe (4th kyu); Eddie Mingo - brown two white stripes (1st kyu) and Tom Salt - brown two white stripes(1st kyu).
The club is now preparing for its Christmas party, which is being held on December 18.
Sensei Marianne Fox says: “At the party we will reflect on another fantastic year and everything the students have achieved over the past year. Our family is always growing and I am always amazed and humbled how supportive everyone is to each other. Lympstone dojo wouldn’t be where it is today without the incredible students and their families.”
