Honiton players, officials and supporters make fruitless – and frustrating – trip to Torquay

Honiton were left feeling thoroughly ‘fed up’ with the cancellation of their Tribute Cornwall and Devon game at Torquay Athletic.
The reason for their unhappiness was owing to the fact that the match referee called the fixture off with everybody present and happy to get on with the game!
Honiton’s Jerry Rice said: “Having hired a bus and being told it was on we set off, along with a number of our loyal supporters. Other supporters travelled under their own steam or by train and so, as a club, we can only apologise to them for their wasted journeys as this was something we had absolutely no control over.”
He continued: “From my own point of view, speaking as someone who has to make difficult ‘calls’ re games being on and off at Allhallows, it is worth remembering that even if both sides are willing to play, it’s always the ref who gets the final say and he usually makes it on safety grounds, which you can understand.
“Even if we are desperate to play, when making decisions my final thoughts are always ‘will the ref let us play!’ – and if my head is telling me it will be a ‘no’ then we cancel straight away to save people wasting time and, more importantly, money.
“What’s disappointing is the fact both sides probably really wanted this weekend to be the last game before the Christmas break and now everyone has to drop what they were planning and do it all again this coming Saturday (December 22).”
As a footnote, Jerry added: “It was so annoying all round on Saturday and I am now mindful of the fact that it seems we have a forecast of more rain all week, so let’s hope we are not faced with another wasted journey this coming Saturday.”
