Archant

There was another blank in terms of on-course action at Honiton last week with the incessant rain dominating proceedings, writes Ann Desmoulins.

However, there may have been no golf played, but there was still plenty happening at the club.

New lady captain Liz Rogers celebrated her role with the traditional Drive-In. With the course officially closed for the day, the Champagne Waltz fun competition was cancelled and replaced with a quiz on the rules of golf (as devised by the R and R) with many of the questions being rather misleading, which made the answers quite tricky!

Then everyone donned their waterproofs and accompanied Liz to the eighth tee (this being drier than the traditional 18th) to witness the nerve-wracking drive down the fairway which she accomplished with aplomb.

Retiring captain Janet Hughes did not have to putt – out as the greens were out of play. The ladies then returned to the clubhouse where Liz presented prizes for the Quiz and generously provided Buck’s Fizz and a light lunch before introducing Jo from Devon Link Up, a local charity which provides support for people with learning disabilities and also autism, this being the charity chosen by liz and men’s captain-elect Richard Beard (a welcome guest at the lunch) as a joint fund-raising project for their year.

A magnificent hamper was raffled (and won by Elizabeth Ward) with the proceeds going to Devon Link Up.
