Gillingham breaks club record that has stood for 27 years

A second swimming pool will help Weston-super-Mare's competitive swimmers.

A dozen junior Exmouth Swimming Club members were in action annual Devon County Sprint Gala held at the Plymouth Life Centre,

The meet involved swimmers competing in all four strokes over 50 metres and the Exmouth contingent returned home with some good results.

Sophie Raven was involved in the first event of the day, the girl’s 50m butterfly and she swam to a new personal best (PB) time in the 12 years age group.

Grace Gillingham, competing in the 13 years category, served up an outstanding swim to set a new club record time of 35:31, winning the event and finishing a full two seconds ahead of the second placed swimmer!

Age groups for the sprints are based on a youngsters age as at December 31. As Grace is still only 12 her time brokle the club’s age 12 fly record which had stood since 1990!

In the boys 50 metre breaststroke, there were PBs for Josh Smith, Jules Roberts, Ryan Voysey and Joseph Bollington.

Young Jospeh picked up a bronze medal with his time of 38.62.

That proved to be the first of three medals at the meeting for Bollington who later picked up awards in both backstroke and freestyle.

In the girls 50m backstroke Sophie Spiller swam a time of 36.05 seconds, and as a result gained the silver medal, whilst Lily Allen was unlucky to miss out on the medals finishing fourth in the 14 years age group.

There was some comfort for Lily, in that her time of 37.73, was a new PB.

The backstroke also saw the first of a hat-trick of PBs from the meet for Megan Harris.

Megan was the most successful Exmouth swimmer at the meeting in terms of the PB count for she saw new bests also in freestyle and breaststroke.

Sophie Raven followed up her fly PB, with a backstroke PB. In the boys fly there were second PBs of the meet for both Jules Roberts and Josh Smith.

The second session of the meet, began with the girls 50m freestyle, and Sophie Spiller swam to the silver medals in a time of 30:27.

In the boys backstroke, in addition to Joseph Bollington’s bronze medal success, Josh Smith continued his good form with a new PB.

In the final

event of the day for the girls, Heidi Schunck produced a terrific performance in the breaststroke, missing out on a new PB by just 0.45 of a second!

Sophie Raven also swam well in finishing in fifth place out of a total of 47 girls in her age group.

The final event of the day was the fast and furious boys 50m freestyle, which saw PBs for the clubs two

youngest swimmers at the meet, Ryan Fitzhenry and Finlay Roberts.

Finlay set a new time of 38.63 seconds, and Ryan took nearly two seconds off his previous best with a swim of 40.46.

Jules Roberts completed a hat-trick of PBs, finishing with bronze medal, whilst Josh Smith ensured that he made it four out of four PBs by setting a new best mark in the same event.
