The Wednesday Men’s Over-60 League always gives the Budleigh bowlers the opportunity to test their talent against some of the best bowlers in Devon, and this was the case as they played Exonia last week and found themselves outclassed, writes David Roberts.

Played over four rinks, two home and two away, there was a big defeat for the Budleigh men as they went down 137-41.

They were totally dominated on three of the rinks with the only highlight for the team coming from the home rink of Richard Cooper, Tony Lim, David Roberts and skip John Dill, who were just defeated 20-18, having pushed their opponents all the way only to relinquish the lead in the final four ends. With three fixtures left, the Budleigh men are yet to engineer an overall win in this league.

In the Budleigh Evening League there was another disappointing result for the Budleigh Buzzhawks as their early season form seems to have deserted them. The Maderia Robins, who have been playing well recently, took all six points on offer to take them to the top of the league.

For the Buzzhawks, Bill Barber, Peter Burch and skip Brian Evans led throughout only to falter in the final ends, going down 21-17, while Brian Alabaster, Rod Freer and Leighton Burston struggled to get a foothold in their game and slipped to a heavy 28-5 defeat to a buoyant Maderia team.

In the Exonia League, the Budleigh men just missed out, going down 15-13 as Leighton Burston, Brian Evans and David Roberts, who were always ‘in the game’, could not quite find the shots needed to get them over the line.

The Sidmouth Evening league also provided a tough test for the Budleigh men as they came up against top-of-the-league Sidmouth Beachcombers and were defeated 11-23.

Holding their own in the early stages, the rink of Bill Barber, Gerard McCarthy, Terry Escott and skip Paul Griffin played well, but it was a case of coming up against a top team playing consistently well.

In the popular Tuesday morning Triples League, there were wins for Team Elm – Celia Mangeng, Mike Killoran and Brian Summers, who won 20-14 and for Team Willow – Bob Gooch, Hilary Medley and John Dill, who won 22-18.

On the social front, there was a very enjoyable Saturday evening event held at the East Devon Golf Club with almost 50 members present to celebrate the Christmas festivities and enjoy great food and great company.

A big thank you, to Lilian Grainger for her superb organisation of the evening and to Mo Bond for once again arranging a very attractive raffle.

This coming Saturday (December 15) sees the club’s annual Christmas Draw and Buffet at the club and thank you, to all members who have donated prizes for the draw.

The bowling week ahead sees mixed friendlies against Sidmouth and Exonia, the Madeira Bluebirds play Sidmouth in the Budleigh Evening League and the men play Plymouth in the Parrott Trophy home and away.
