Exmouth SC play host to Comet Trios National Championships

The penultimate weekend of July saw 24 Comet Trios gather at Exe Sailing Club for their National Championship sponsored by Noble Marine, writes Bob Horlock.
With 13 local boats and 11 visitors this was the biggest trio fleet for five years and it contained a fairly even split between the new and original rigs.
Racing took place in Lyme Bay and was favoured with sunshine and sea breezes on all three days.
Race officer, Les Arcott, set either, triangle, sausage, triangle or windward leeward courses and both saw close and fair racing throughout the fleet. Both new and old rigs started together but, unlike last year, the boats with new rigs proved to be significantly faster than those with the old rig.
With two races on Friday and Sunday and three on Saturday the full race programme was completed for the first time since 2014.
Prizes were on offer for both rigs with the original rigs being won by Richard Sallis and Carole Williams from Cotswold SC, five points clear of Symon Gregory and Veronique Hart of Exe SC with David and Charlie Talbot of Hawley Lake SC in third place.
The new rigs were closely contested with all six top boats beating each other in one race or another. After discarding the two worst scores Bob and Colette Horlock from Exe SC finally came out on top with three race wins and two second places one point ahead of Adrian and Tracie Padro from Shustoke SC who had three race wins a second and a third.
Seven times trio national champions Andrew and Caroline McAusland from Exe SC were third.
In the prize draw for a new jib, kindly donated by Peak Dinghies, John Andrews from Whitefriars SC was the lucky winner.
With skittles and a barbecue on the Friday evening and a three course dinner on the Saturday evening, Exe SC provided an excellent event for all the competitors to enjoy and at the prize giving Bob Horlock thanked all the volunteers and staff who had made the event such a success and in particular the organizer Caroline McAusland.
