Exmouth darts has lost a very special person.

Steve Bessant, who recently passed away, is going to be greatly missed by so many folk on, and off, the oche.

Exmouth Darts committee member Dean Wiltshire best summed up the life and times of Steve – with a view to darts – when he said; “For those who didn’t know Steve personally, he was a stalwart to the Exmouth Darts League and also darts in Devon in general.

“Right through from his playing days, to his work as a committee member, and to offering his time to drive the Exmouth Inter-League Darts team on numerous occasions to venues all over Devon (and with knowing some of the darts players he had to drive over the years, he deserves a knighthood just for that!)

“He was also known throughout Devon Super League as both a player and again, being a driver to all corners of Devon, which again deserves another knighthood!

“In the last couple of years, Steve’s work as a committee member of the Exmouth Darts League has seen him set up and manage various open competitions out of the Country House pub, which has attracted players from across the county and encouraged players from all different standards to get on the oche and play darts.

“It would be impossible to name all the things that Steve has done for darts in Exmouth and his genuine passion for the game shone through on a daily basis. He didn’t just like the game - he loved it.”

The Exmouth Darts League is set to honour Steve’s memory by renaming the League Cup as the ‘Steve Bessant Cup’.

Dean Witshire says: “It’s a small way in which we can show our appreciation for an extremely kind, loyal gentleman, who would also put the needs of others before his own.

“I always said, if you couldn’t see Steve coming, you would definitely hear him!”

Dean rounded things off, by saying: “Steve will be sadly missed and will always be remembered as a real legend to friends and family in Devon.”
