Archant

Despite having to play on a very heavy pitch at Winslade Park last Saturday, East Budleigh produced some of their best football this season in Macron League Three and the final score of 4-2 to the Jays somewhat flattered the home side, writes Mark Auton.

Budleigh were quickly out of the blocks with some great attacking play putting pressure on the Clyst back line.

The early endeavours eventually paid off with Liam Matthew picking out George Harris, who kept his composure well to find the bottom corner and open the scoring.

The Jays back three of Steve Hitchcock, Adam Jones and Darren Everest were looking assured, however, completely against the run of play, the hosts levelled from a free-kick.

After the interval, Budleigh regained the initiative and regained the lead when an Adam Jones long throw, which was a constant threat throughout the contest, was headed on by Hitchcock and tucked away by Hugo Demetre.

Budleigh continued to press home their advantage and the third goal duly arrived when Tom Chudley found space on the left from where he squared for Dan Atkinson to round the home goalkeeper before scoring.

Provider then turned scorer when Chudley latched onto Matthew’s through ball before beautifully lobbing the keeper.

Budleigh blotted their copybook late on when pushing up for an offside, leaving one man alone at the back post to grab a consolation for the home side.

In what was a fine all round shift from the Jays it was great to see Jack Howarth return to the squad, Demetre was strong in the midfield, but the Man of the Match award went to Everest for his all-round exploits.

This Saturday (December 8), the Jays are in local derby action at Vicarage Road where they entertain neighbours Budleigh Salterton, whilst the Reserves will hope to return to action at Thorverton in Macron League Seven.
