In the Devon County Chess Association Congress (67th) held in Torquay last week local player Grandmaster Keith Arkell came joint first in the Premier section while East Budleigh player, Brian Gosling, finished second in the Boniface Morning event.

Grandmaster Keith Arkell is the East Budleigh club president and he has agreed to play in the clubs Devon Cup (KO) team for the new season.

These matches are made up of eight board contests and so the club does need all available members to play whilst they are also keen to recruit new chess players to the club.

Club secretary Brian Gosling says: “Keith [Arkell] has also agreed to a simultaneous display that will be held in East Budleigh towards the end of the 2017/18 season.

“It is worth pointing out that when we did this before, he won 18-0, so we need to be looking for improvement in terms of our performance!

“Tickets for the event will be available at the start of the new season.”

Brian Gosling was recently in action in the Devon U180 team which beaten Notts in the quarter-final and Surrey in the semi-final before defeating Middlesex in the final of the National team championship.

In the last match, Devon beat Middlesex on a tie break board count

The first meeting of the new season is being held this Thursday (September 14) at the All Saint’s Church Hall in East Budleigh with a 7pm start.

Any potential new members are more than welcome to come along and be assured of a warm welcome!
