Withycombe and Exmouth met in an Under-13 game that saw two large squads of players give action to no fewer than 50 young rugby players.

Exmouth began the brighter and dominated the opening exchanges, scoring first with a try that was zealously celebrated!

The try clearly stung Withycombe for they were soon on the front foot, albeit with some switching of playing positions.

Some quick passes saw the ball out to wing Josh Coles who raced home from 40 yards out to restore parity to the contest.

There then followed a period where neither side could get the upper hand until Withy were able to put some phases together and a run from Cody Bate was halted just a yard from the line.

The fast thinking Coles was again on hand to scoop up the ball and dive over from a yard out.

Exmouth resounded and camped themselves in Withy territory, until with half time approaching, a turnover saw the ball again shipped wide and Coles once again turned on the burners to race clear, this time from 50 yards out.

Withy sent out a completely changed XV for the second half and they struck first with Andy Maier bursting through the Cockles’ lines to score a try.

Exmouth hit back and, had it not been for some exceptional last-ditch defending from Withy, would surely have scored more tries than the one they got when the ball was worked well in the centre and some weak Withy tackling was punished.

Withy replied, scoring the games next two tries – they almost got a third, but winger Bailey Coles was well tackled just short of the line.

Exmouth scored a further try before the move of the game that saw three quick passes prior to the ball arriving with Maier, who had the presence of mind to off-load to flying wing Josh Coles to round off the scoring.

A great mornings rugby from two determined and evenly matched sides. All spectators left feeling they had watched something special.
