Clode strike sees Axmouth United to first clean sheet win of the season

Axmouth United were good value for their Macron League Division Three 1-0 home win over Exeter-based Winchester.

What’s more, the game also saw United keep a clean sheet for the first time in the league this season.

After a scrappy start, with the wind playing a huge part, the home team settled and a good move down their right saw Jake Rostron play a great ball in for Jacob Clode, who controlled and finished expertly.

The visitors posed a constant aerial threat, but Axmouth soaked up the pressure thanks to great defending that saw Sam Waddon clear off the line to maintain their lead at the break.

Axmouth started the second half well, but few chances were created at either end. Axmouth were able to call on their strong subs bench to bring on fresh legs and see out their first clean sheet of the season.

Manager Asa Sandman felt that Axmouth had done really well in handling the physical and aerial aspects of Winchester’s play, with solid displays from Zak Meaker and Cody Northcott at the heart of the defence. Sixteen-year-old Kieran Burraston had also done well coming off the bench. However, Axmouth’s star man was Sam Waddon, who his manager felt had an exceptional game at left back.
