Budleigh Salterton Under-16s ended their 2018 Exeter and District Youth League U16’s Division One fixtures with a disappointing midweek evening 2-1 home defeat at the hands of basement side Twyford Spartans, writes SpursTom.
Both teams went into the game beneath the Greenway Lane floodlights off the back of knockout cup tie success with the Robins winning a League Cup tie and Spartans enjoying success in a Plate competition match.
From the kick-off it was the visitors who were first into their stride catching the Robins defence cold to take the lead within three minutes. Whether it was because of several changes to the starting line-up, or some players still had their minds on exams, the hosts were second to every ball as the Spartans deservedly went into the break with much belief.
At the start of the second period Budleigh’s manager brought on all his substitutes including his three leading goal scorers.
This seemed to do the trick as their begin a period of constant waves of attack that eventually paid dividends when, in the 57th minute a well-struck free0kick from Joe Graham nestled in the back of the Spartans net.
Sadly, for another good turnout of home support, parity was enjoyed for less than a minute as the home defence were outpaced by a counter attack, and, although keeper Ieuan Brockway got his hand to the ball, he could not stop the shot into his top right hand corner, for what proved to be the winning goal.
Twyford Spartan’s goal heroes in this, their first league win of the season, were Will Batemen and Keiron Bunch, the latter who was involved in almost all his team’s best moments.
For the Robins, their next scheduled fixture is on January 12 when they make the short trip to Sidmouth Warriors.
