Budleigh Bowls Club boosted by big number of new members

The Opening Day for the Budleigh Bowlers outdoor season was a great success as more than 40 members of the club donned their whites on a sunny afternoon at Cricket Field Lane, writes David Roberts.
The club has been very successful in recruiting new members over the past few weeks and it was pleasing to see so many turning out on the first official day of bowling.
Joan Shaw, president of the Budleigh Games Club, bowled the first bowl of the season and that particular ceremony was followed by the traditional Captain’s Spider competition.
This competition sees a bottle of whisky is placed in the centre of the green and all bowlers have one shot, the nearest being the winner.
The winner was Brian Goddard a new member to the club and Brian is donating this to the Force Cancer Charity where his daughter Nicki Mallett works at Wonford Hospital.
In addition a monetary donation from the days proceeds is being made to the local Hospicecare where our vice captain Bobbie Vanstone is a driver for the charity.
On the greens the afternoon included a two wood round robin competition with the eventual winners being Derek Stanley, Alan Davies, Bill Barber and Di Dixon. Runners up were Gerry Roberts, Annette Davies, Joan Cowing and Rosemary Lumbeta.
This was followed by a delightful tea, contributions coming from the members and a big thank you to all concerned in making this event so enjoyable.
The season kicks off this coming week with visits from two touring sides - Westlecot and St Dunstans and the ladies travel to Morchard Bishop in the opening match of the over 50s league.
