Journal reporter Dan Wilkins has been named Man of the Year by his Exmouth Slimming World group after shedding nearly three stones in under a year.
Dan, aged 34, of St Andrews Road, Exmouth, joined the Tuesday evening group in August 2017, held at the Open Door Centre, in Church Street, as away to make new friends.
When Dan lost four-and-a-half pounds in the first week he was inspired to carry on with the slim group and has since been awarded two accolades for his efforts.
At the end of May Dan was voted Man of the Year by his fellow slimmers; the award comes six months after he was named Mr Sleek by the group in November 2017.
Dan, who hopes to shed a further stone to reach his target of 11-stone seven pounds, said: “In the first week I told myself that it probably won’t work and at least I can say I have given it a try. However I lost four-and-a-half pounds and I haven’t looked back since.
“I joined mainly as a way to meet new friends but I also had it in my mind that according the NHS I was overweight at 15 stone eight pounds.
“I was told years ago that my blood pressure was too high and was probably being caused by my weight; I can’t wait until the next time I have to have my blood pressure taken.
“I set my target which was both a healthy weight according to BMI and the lowest weight I can remember being.
Dan added: “There were certain steep hills, like The Beacon and Albion Hill, which I used to have stop halfway to catch my breath, or because my heart was beating too fast.
“Now I am pleased to say I can walk up The Beacon without stopping – I haven’t tried Albion Hill yet.”
