The instrument is dedicated in memory for former parish priest, the late Father Michael Koppel
A splendid organ has been installed at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, in Axminster.
It was dedicated by parish priest Father Anthony Cockram in
memory of his esteemed predecessor, the late Father Michael Koppel.
It was he who realised the need for a stronger organ and made the trip to St Paul’s Anglican church, in Sherborne, where their instrument was considered redundant.
He quickly realised it would suit St Mary’s well and it was transported to Axminster and erected for use in an astonishingly quick five days.
The accomplished Lyme Regis organist Richard Godfrey had also inspected the organ at Sherborne and decided it was too good for the scrap yard.
He put together a celebration recital at St Mary’s and insisted he should perform in tandem with his mezzo-soprano friend Elizabeth Denham.
For all Godfrey’s skill as both soloist and accompanist many in the audience clearly felt that the show was ‘stolen’ by the clear and impressive voice of Elizabeth Denham.
