Capturing pictures from thunderstorms and rainbows to the Northern Lights - Exmouth-based photographer, Pete Johns, shares his life-affirming experiences.
“I’ve been using cameras for over a decade now through various disciplines for a hobby, occasionally venturing into Wedding photography, however it was as recent as November 2015 when I suddenly fell in love with the art of landscape photography.
“It was a trip to the Isle of Skye where it all clicked – the technical side and my passion - and since then I’ve found myself exploring many wondrous and inspiring locations, witnessing incredible sunrises and sunsets, thunderstorms and rainbows, carpets of fog and even the majestic Northern Lights in awe-inspiring displays.
“If it wasn’t for photography I wouldn’t have braved the elements and found myself in such situations that so often occur in such unsociable hours and unpleasant climates. I’m very thankful to have the opportunity to visit and live such life-affirming experiences.
“However, home is where it always has been, in Exmouth, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I find the beach and Woodbury Common fascinating locations to live near and no matter how many times I go to the River Exe with my camera I always find something new to shoot and get inspired by.
“I was very fortunate and grateful to get first place in 2016’s Photo of Exmouth competition, which was published in the Journal, and that has spurred me on to do even more photography.
“At the beginning of 2016 I setup a photography website with my brother – http://johnsbrothers.photography – as a collection of our favourite images over the years. Both myself and my brother (whom also visited Exmouth Community College but has since moved away) remain keen amateur photographers with a love and passion for landscape photography.”
