A special service will be held at Exeter Cathedral at 5.30pm this evening (Friday).

The cathedral has been closed to the public due to the fire in Cathedral Yard.

Cathedral Green has been used as an operational base for Devon and Somerset Fire Service who continue to battle the blaze which is believed to have spread to the reception of the historic Royal Clarence Hotel.

The cathedral is currently offering tea to firefighters on the ground who have been tackling the blaze since 5.12am this morning.

Tonight’s Eucharist will be led by the University of Exeter chapel choir.

A cathedral spokesman said: “At that service special prayers will be said for all affected for businesses and residents affected by today’s incident, the emergency services and the community of our city.”
