Cranbrook and Rockbeare now has its own Women’s Institute (WI). Meeting once a month, the new group has many events planned for 2017 and is looking for more members…

Following three information meetings, the official formation of Cranbrook and Rockbeare Women’s Institute took place on February 1, 2017, at Rockbeare Village Hall.

New and potential members were joined by WI Advisers Ros Crook and Jenny Roberts to witness the signing of the constitution by Tracey Palmer, president, and Liz Middlebrook, secretary.

On the conclusion of the business section of the meeting, attendees got to know each other over refreshments and a fun questions and answers activity. Three lucky ladies won raffle prizes. Ideas from the meeting have helped the committee to create an events programme for 2017.

The new group now has 13 members, with more people interested in joining in the near future.

Tracy Palmer said: “The WI is a great organisation for women to get together and make friends, while having the opportunity to learn new skills, gain knowledge of a range of subjects, and campaign to change things for the better, tackling the issues that matter to them.

“It is much more than the stereotypical images of Jam and Jerusalem or Calendar Girls. The programme I and the rest of the committee have lined up includes crafting activities, health and beauty demonstrations, and speakers from WESC [the specialist centre for visual improvement] and Boscastle Museum of Witchcraft and Magic. We hope to hold fundraising events open to everyone, and start campaigning activities after voting to select mandates for 2017 at the national annual meeting in June.”

Cranbrook and Rockbeare WI’s meetings take place on the first Wednesday of each month between 7.30pm and 9.30pm at Rockbeare Village Hall, Silver Lane, EX5 2LP, and visitors are welcome.

Refreshments are available, and there are monthly raffles and a ‘bring and buy’ table. There will be competitions during the year, plus members can attend events at federation (regional) and national levels.

Annual membership costs £39.
