Exhibition of new work by film maker turned painter opens in January.

AN experimental film maker from North Devon has turned her hand to a different sort of canvas – and the results will be on display in Torrington from January 8.

Transient Landscapes at The Plough Arts Centre is a showcase of work by Laura Hudson that began in the wild mountains of the French Cévennes and continues here in Devon.

Her work explores light on land as it shifts and folds in time. It follows nine years living at a farmstead in the French mountains.

There she learned to grow and save the seeds of open-pollinated edible crops, just as they did 800 years ago. Shortages of water, wild weather and roaming boar made life difficult but it was the energy of the land that drew her there.

This is Laura’s first solo show in the UK. Until 2004 she worked full-time as a curator and project manager in London, specialising in moving image and new media arts.

“Being close to the land has a way of bringing into focus what is important, for me it was appreciating what makes me happy and to follow my childhood dream of becoming a painter,” she said.

The exhibition at The Plough runs until January 26. For more information visit www.theploughartscentre.org.uk
