A Sidmothian artist’s work has been shown in Paris and London but will be displayed in her home town for the first time next month.

Clare White (1903-1997) was a dedicated watercolourist and traveller who lived in Sidmouth for her first 46 years, before moving to St Ives where she became an active member of the arts colony.

Despite interntational acclaim, there is no record of her ever exhibiting her work in her birthplace, so the homecoming exhibition will celebrate her life at Kennaway House.

It will feature a collection of White’s original watercolours painted in destinations as diverse as Egypt, Barbados, Switzerland, Sicily and closer to home in Devon.

Exhibition curator Andrew Pollard said: “We are delighted to be bringing Clare White’s watercolours to Sidmouth. White loved to paint from an early age and Devon cottages, bridges and rural scenes feature amongst her paintings of Egyptian pyramids and Swiss mountains.

“It will be joy to show White’s work and tell her story through sketchbooks and memorabilia in the beautiful setting of Sidmouth’s Kennaway House.”

The exhibition will run from Friday, March 29 until Saturday, April 6 (excluding Easter Sunday), and open daily from 10am until 4.30pm.
