Passionate about potatoes at Eggesford

************

Everything you ever wanted to know about spuds (but were afraid to ask) at Eggesford Gardens Grow Your Own Potato Day on Saturday (February 2).

LEARN everything you ever wanted to know about growing your own potatoes at Eggesford Gardens Grow Your Own Potato Day this Saturday.

The free event runs from 11am-4pm at the garden centre near Chulmleigh and as well as 70 different varieties of spud to choose from, there will be plenty of advice on choosing and growing the best variety from local horticultural expert David Loder.

There will also be special offers on the day, along with a free prize draw and fun competitions for all the family.

Potatoes are one of the easiest vegetables to grow so make an excellent choice for the novice gardener who wants to start ‘growing their own’.

They are also a good crop for ground that has not been cultivated before which is great news for any gardeners starting a vegetable patch for the first time.

A lack of space is no problem and good results can be had by growing spuds in a container or special potato planter.

The weather in 2012 badly affected the potato harvest for growers, both commercial and amateur, and has led to higher prices for potatoes in the shops.

While it has also affected the seed potato harvest, there will still be plenty of varieties to choose from, but some may be in short supply so it is a good idea to buy early to avoid disappointment.

There is a growing interest in ‘heritage’ varieties of potato, which often have unusual coloured skins and better flavour.

Eggesford Gardens is also holding a Grow Your Own Vegetables Day on Sunday, February 17.
