studio@QT in Barnstaple hosts updated version of Brecht’s anti-war classic - with live music.

A MODERN, darkly humorous adaptation of one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, Bertholt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, is coming to studio@QT at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple on Friday and Saturday.

Presented by Blackeyed Theatre, the play has been brought bang up to date, with live music in a quick playing, quick thinking and fun production.

Mother Courage and Her Children asks fundamental questions about the effect beliefs have on the world. It has been translated by Lee Hall, who wrote the screenplay for War Horse, and is directed by Tom Neill, with the intention of creating an entertaining mix of lightness and depth.

“Mother Courage is a powerful play to stage at a time when we are questioning our own culture of commerce and material gain,” said Tom.

“We’re taking an up-to-date, comic and energetic approach to it – the translation by Lee Hall is terrifically witty, the cast is very versatile, and our composer Ron McAllister has scored some beautiful new songs for us.”

The play has historical connections with North Devon and the Queen’s Theatre - Joan Littlewood’s staging of the anti-war play at the Queen’s in 1955 was the first time a Brecht play had been performed in the UK.

It starts at 8pm on both evenings. tickets are available from the box office on 01271 324242 or visit for more information.
