A sample CD was enough to convince Shammick Acoustic to book English folk duo Broom Bezzums for Saturday night’s concert at the Pack O’ Cards in Combe Martin.

Normally organisers aim to listen to acts live beforehand, but it was a bit difficult to do that with Andrew Cadie and Mark Bloomer as they live in Germany these days.

But after hearing two lead singers, multi-instrumentalists with fiddle, guitars, mandolins, Northumbrian pipes and bass drum, topped off with soaring vocal harmonies, that was enough.

They seem to strike a keen balance between authentic traditional music and the creative freedom of the current songwriter ‘Nu-folk’ wave.

They have become one of the most prominent acts in the folk scene in Germany, and edging into the mainstream while staying true to their roots, are attracting an ever-wider audience.

Show of Hands has asked them to undertake support on two of their tours.

The concert starts at 8pm and tickets are available from the Pack O’ Cards, Pets Pantry in Combe Martin or visit
