Exmouth head coach Steve Perry was delighted with his charges’ efforts in the win over Maidenhead.

He said: “The most pleasing thing for me was that, on an afternoon when again the defence stood up well, we only conceded a penalty try and one to a driving maul.”

He continued: “It’s not been a particularly conscious thing about placing emphasis on defensive work. It’s more a case of we have asked the players to adopt a change in system and, whilst it’s not perfect by any means – and by that I mean you only have to look at the ‘points against’ column – what I would say is that it is very much a case of ‘work in progress’ and I have to be pleased with the progress we are making.”

There’s no game for the Cockles this coming Saturday (October 13), so we asked, what’s your take on having a Saturday off?

The Cockles head coach responded: “It’s wonderful! To be fair it’s a good thing that these ‘free dates’ are factored in. Let’s face it, the season is a slog. It’s eight hard months of action plus the pre-season games and the players do really well to commit as they do. So, when we get a Saturday off, that’s what it needs to be – a break from the action and time to rest!”

After the week off it’s back to league action and another Devon derby with an October 20 trip to Newton Abbot.

Perry says: “At home, the lads have been doing very well and they clearly enjoy playing at the Imperial Ground.

“I am not getting hung up just yet on the fact that we are still to win away this season. On reflection, we have played two very tough away games with matches at Drybrook and Ivybridge – and let’s not lose sight of the fact we only lost by a single point at Drybrook and Ivybridge are currently six wins from six!”

He continued: “Ideally, the lads will recharge the batteries with this free Saturday and come back champing at the bit to go to Newton Abbot and give a good account of themselves.”
