Woodbury relief as Hughes signing issue resolved without suspension

Woodbury suffered their fourth postponement in the last five Fresha league Division Four match days when their Endurance Park meeting with Axmouth United was called off.

The Woods have played just once since early December and will be hoping for fairer weather to allow them to travel into Exeter to play Lords XI at the King George V playing fields this Saturday.

The villagers boss Adam Reid recognises the importance of February in terms of his teams’ targets this campaign.

He says: “We have possibly as many as five games in February to include one under floodlights and that means, with 15 points up for grabs, a big haul could push us right to the edge of the promotion race.”

Woodbury have played just ten of their 24 matches so far and head to Exeter on Saturday sitting eighth in the table ten point shy of the promotion places, but with games in hand on all but one of the teams who currently sit above them.

Meanwhile the Woodbury Reserves are hoping to switch their game this coming Saturday from the severely waterlogged Town Lane ground – currently more suited to duck racing than playing football – to Endurance Park, to try and get the fixture with Pinhoe Reserves played as they have also played just once since early December.

They will be certainly be without Will Bennett (work) and Jamie Clark, who tore tendons in his shoulder at the weekend and could face the rest of the season on the sidelines.

The Reserves may be bolstered by big Paul Rowsell as he looks to rehabilitate following a knee injury he suffered back in September.

Alex Hughes escaped major punishment for signing two Devon and Exeter registration forms at the start of the season. The hit man was fined £10 by the league and manager Reid was just pleased there was no suspension.

With just the one game played in January there was not much action to work with in terms of naming the Woodbury Player of the Month, but the honour was still presented and won by Richard Hill.

Woods boss Reid said: “He (Hill) struck that wonderful treble in the local derby against Exmouth Amateurs and so just pipped new-signing Richie Ralph for the individual honour. Hopefully the month of February will yield more than one game on which to select out Player of the Month.”
