Otterton-based drag racing star Mark Wolfie Smith was in action at the latest Straightliners meeting held at the Dakota Raceway, Smeatharpe.

The weather was not good across the weekend and so ended any hope of some spectacular times, but Smith still managed to take himself ever closer to being crowned class champion for the second year running.

He says: “I spent the whole of Saturday scrutineering. It was a busy day – albeit a soggy one – as there was a record turnout of vehicles to take part in the Saturday action. It did dry up somewhat for the Sunday, but not well enough for any serious times. That said I still managed at 9.54 run reaching 143mph.”

That time was sufficient to ensure he is now in touching distance of another title and he also managed to record the day’s fastest time of all the competitors for 60 feet, with his time being 1.511 seconds, a better time than a number of riders at the meeting with much more powerful machines.

Wolfie also had kind words to say about young Baxter Williams, of whom he said: “He [Baxter] is going to be a star of this sport, there’s no doubt about it. It’s amazing to think that, at the tender age of 12, he is on track to be crowned the Dakota Street Bike Champion for 2017 [that’s a tile previously won by Smith]. It’s incredible to think that he is not yet allowed to ride machines that will do any more than 70mph and yet he is beating all-comers in his category.”

As for Smith, there are a couple of meetings left this year before, in 2018, he has a real crack at claiming a new PB.

He explained saying: “There was a new track record nailed by Phil Wood last weekend, but he is on a 653 horsepower machine – I currently ride one with only a third of that horse power. However, I have a plan and, together with my great mate Skinny Patmore, my bike is going to be upgraded this winter so I can operate on nitros oxide next year – and then I am sure I will be knocking on the door.”

It remains a burning ambition for Smith to get his bike down the drag track in a time of under nine 9 seconds – don’t bet against him achieving that inside the next 12 months.
