Withycombe were 48-10 winners when they entertained Tavistock in a Tribute Cornwall and Devon meeting.

Withy match secretary Neil Price said before the game that in order for the Raleigh Park side to win they would need to: “Win the battle in the trenches, and also play the conditions well.”

Withy had Dave Richard sin-binned as early as the fifth minute for a ‘tip tackle’! However, this did not deter Tom Pugsley and Sam Conway, who looked very impressive and three successive raids on the Tavvy line were repelled.

Richards returned to the action and, with the returning Glen Channing pulling the strings at fly half, it was no surprise when Danny Sansom crossed for the first try. The Conway conversion sailed over and Withy led 7-0.

The visitors hit back with a converted try followed by a successful penalty, but the Withy response was good and, from a well-worked line out move, Sansom again got away to score his second try.

Just before the break Conway broke up the far right of the field and the ball went to second row Rob Griffin, who powered his way over and Withy took a 17-10 lead into the interval.

The second half saw Withy playing with the wind and an early try from Toby Papp followed by another Conway conversion extended the home advantage.

The next home score came after a couple ‘pick-and-go’ moves prior to front rower Liam Cullen scoring a try which Conway converted and now Withy led 31-10.

On the hour mark Ryan Hamilton became the second Withy player to be sent to the sin-bin, but again, despite being a man down, Withy continued to dominate and number eight Alex Taylor scored a try that Conway converted to further extend the lead.

Soon after Taylor scored his second try, this one following terrific work from the home forwards and backs.

There was a special moment for Brad ‘Spud’ Young, who got summoned from the bench to make his first appearance in the Withy 1st XV. In the closing stages the impressive Rob Griffin – later named Withy Man of the Match – powered his way forward only to be stopped just short of the line where Ryan Hamilton – now back from the sin bin – picked up and went over to score Withy’s eighth and final try.
