Withycombe Under-16s were edged out in an entertaining meeting with Taunton with the Somerset side ultimately securing a 33-31 win, slotting a late conversion.

Withy made a bright start and, after break deep into the Taunton 22, a loose ball was cleared, but collected by captain Luke Davis, who made a dive for the line to score and Josh Saunders converted to see Withy into a 7-0 lead.

Taunton levelled eight minutes later and then crossed again to edge ahead. However, two minutes after going behind Withy were level with Jason Farrant setting up Ben Dawson to cross the whitewash and another Saunders conversion evened things up at 14-all, which is how it stayed through to half-time.

Early in the second half a free-kick was conceded by Withy. The Taunton kick didn’t make touch and the ball was taken to the halfway line. Some crisp passing released Callum Freeman, who beat the defenders in a sprint to the line to score another try. Shortly after, Withycombe crossed the line again after an interception by Luke Davis saw him break free to touch down but this time the ball was judged to be held up.

A free kick was won from a scrum to Withycombe inside the Taunton 22, which was quickly taken by Ben Bolwell and passed to Vinnie Neath Rogers. Neath Rogers made his strength count as he powered over the line. The try wasn’t converted, but the score was now 24-14 to Withy.

Further Withy pressure followed, but was relieved as the referee awarded a scrum in Taunton’s favour and they used the ball well to score a try and reduce the arrears to five points.

Withy hit back and, when Saunders converted his own try, the lead had climbed to 31-19.

There was still time for Taunton to hit back and another converted try reduced the Withy lead to five points. There was just a minute left when the Somerset side struck again under the posts and the straightforward kick was slotted to give them a narrow 33-31 success.
