Archant

Withycombe Under-15s were 29-12 winners when they entertained Topsham.

It was Topsham who made the better start and pressure from the kick-off was followed by good hands and support, leading to a try under the posts that lead to a straightforward conversion.

Withy responded well and a combination of good scrummaging and recycling ended with back row Will Cornish crossing for the first home try.

The second Withy try came from a good piece of play from winger Ben Wilkinson, who read a pass well, intercepted the ball and raced clear to cross under the posts and Will Cooper slotted the conversion.

Topsham were soon back on the front foot, but the Withy defence was solid, as was the Tops defending at the opposite end of the pitch and half-time arrived with Withy holding a 12-7 lead.

During the interval Withy made a number of changes and the Tops began to apply sustained pressure. However, Withy defended well and cleared their lines well with some disciplined kicking.

The pressure continued and the Tops levelled things up with an unconverted try, but the Withy response was immediate and a mazy run by Matt Rye took him under the posts to put Withy back into the lead. Will Cooper slotted another conversion and, from the restart, Matt Shaw-Smith shrugged off multiple challenges, making 25 metres of progress before a high tackle ended his charge!

The next try owed much to the dominant Withy scrum and it was Matt Rye, now in the scrum half role, who crossed for an unconverted try.

The contest was rounded off when a Topsham mistake was punished by Tom Humphrey, who caught a poor kick before running clear to leave Withy the 29-12 winners.

The Withy Man of the Match award went to Tom Humphrey for good play in the ruck and Jordan Cooke for excellent control of the back lines. The Withy Man of Steel award went to Ed Warlow.
