On a bitterly cold Saturday morning in Feniton, Budleigh Salterton’s Josh Mingo went from villain to hero in the only match played in the Under-15 Division Two of the Exeter and District Youth League, writes SpursTom.

The Robins, hindered by injuries, travelled to the table toppers to face a team who had won 75 per cent of the league matches contested.

Surprisingly it was the visitors who come out of the block fastest, pushing the hosts onto the back foot forcing them to defend several corners.

For the Robins Ewan Anderson was having a very good first half causing problems down the right. On 31 minutes Feniton’s keeper pulled off a smart save before he was beaten minutes later by a misdirected header from a defender for an own goal.

Within two minutes the score was doubled, Anderson crossing for Joe Walker to send Budleigh into the break with a two goal advantage.

Kicking downhill and with a slight wind behind them, the division leaders came more into the game, but within six minutes they fell further behind with Owen Cresswell capitalizing on another centre by Anderson.

The home team responded immediately blasting a good chance over the bar, but kept coming forward at every opportunity, one of these led to a penalty, Josh Mingo having handled in the area, and up stepped Josh Tree to convert successfully.

Fifteen minutes later it was game on as Angus Meadows further reduced the deficit to 3-2.

Budleigh, to their credit did not let their heads drop by this setback because within minutes they regained their two goal advantage.

Josh Mingo atoned for his earlier error becoming the hero with a defence-splitting pass for Joe Walker to score his second and Budleigh’s fourth and with it a somewhat surprising but well deserved 4–2 away victory.

Though some players stood out more than others, in the end it was all down to a fine team performance.

Mr Rob Thorne, who officiated in the middle, had an excellent game, using common sense where necessary, and he controlled proceedings exceptionally well.
