Upottery Reserves suffered their first Macron League Division Five defeat of the campaign when they were beaten 2-1 by hosts Awliscombe.

Upottery, looking for an eighth straight league win, made a confident start and took a 10th minute lead with the assist from Brad Morris and the finish from Gavin Richards.

Despite both teams looking to play on the front foot, that proved to be the only goal of the first half.

Upottery had the first chance of the second period when they saw a shot cleared off the line, but thereafter the Awls, who had lost all five of their games before this ‘local derby’, took charge.

Aided by a strong wind being in their favour, the Awls levelled after 70 minutes from a well-flighted corner and 10 minutes later the home side scored again.

Upottery threw everything they had at seeking a second goal of their own, but it was not to be.

Upottery boss Alex McCreadie-Taylor said: “Of course, it is disappointing to see our excellent run ended. But let’s credit them [Awliscombe] for, on the day, they were very good and we were simply not good enough and got what we deserved!

“The challenge now is to see how the lads pick themselves back up, and I hope they can do so quickly and put things right this Saturday when we host Ipplepen in the Devon Intermediate Cup.”
