Sidmouth 60, Exmouth 7

On a freezing cold morning at The Blackmore, Sidmouth Under-14s surprisingly got to play their match against Exmouth Under-14s, writes Chris Robinson.

With most of the country under a white blanket of snow Sidmouth’s pitch was perfect for playing rugby on and Sidmouth were very keen to play right from the start.

It was not long before Kennaugh showed his power and pace to score in the corner. From the restart Wright found himself in space and, once he had the momentum, nothing was going to stop him scoring. Kennaugh scored again showing off some dribbling skills and, soon after, Counsell showed off his footwork to score from his own kick ahead.

Exmouth, to their credit, tried to gain some momentum of their own, but Wright again found himself in space and sprinted 30 metres to score his second. Allen converted both these tries.

The last try of the half was scored by Syradd, who was able to power over in the corner after gaining quick ball from his forwards.

The second half saw a lot of substitutions, but Sidmouth were still dominant. Wright almost immediately scored his hat-trick from the restart after an excellent run from Bolton and Counsell converted. The game became a bit static for a while as both teams tried to boss the scrum, but Syradd spotted a gap and was able to score his second.

This time Exmouth managed to get the energy they needed and, in spite of some excellent tackling from Hughes, they scored between the posts. Exmouth continued their pressure, but a great tackle from Robinson and some equally great work from his fellow forwards secured quick ball. Davies then fired it out to Counsell, who ran the length of the pitch to finish off a very satisfactory morning’s work. Well done to the whole squad and particularly the substitutes, who were frozen to the bench in the first half!
