Town back in action, but beaten at Newquay by late goal

After finally playing at Newquay last Saturday, Exmouth Town ended their 63-day enforced winter break, writes John Dibsdall.

This Saturday (February 17), they will be hoping to play their first home game of 2018 when Falmouth are the visitors to Southern Road.

The Cornish side last tasted defeat in the league back in October when an Ace High goal separated the sides. Falmouth currently sit sixth in the league with just four defeats from 20 games played.

The game at Newquay saw Town go down 1-0 with the goal coming with just five minutes left to play.

Both sides had chances in the first half, with Ben Steer playing in a more forward role bringing a good save out of the home ‘keeper.

Equally, Joe Moore had to be alert in Town’s goal where the conditions were not conducive to open attractive football. As well as the heavy pitch, there was a swirling sea mist that added to the enjoyment!

Without the suspended Ace High and Brandon Green, Town’s squad was depleted further by the non-availability of the Rawlings brothers, both injured playing in college football.

The Town cause was also not helped when central defender Harvey Newman, finally making his debut, was injured in the first half and had to be substituted.

At least the team will have benefited from playing a competitive game, which will help as they have a string of attractive fixtures with Launceston, Plymouth Parkway, Bodmin, Tavistock and two games with Cullompton Rangers next on the fixture list.

Town Reserves were also in action; they went down 2-0 to Clyst Rovers on Saturday and this coming Saturday they travel to Witheridge for another Macron League top flight outing.
