Sub Isaac impresses as Hippos win derby

Honiton Town ended an unbeaten week with a superb 4-1 win at Budleigh Salterton.

The week had started with the previous Saturday’s clean sheet win over Teignmouth, continued with a terrific 2-2 midweek draw away at high-flying Bovey Tracey and rounded off with an excellent all-round show at Greenway Lane.

In a bright start at Budleigh, Town took the lead through teenage striker Blake Freemantle. However, the hitman looked to have damaged his hamstring in scoring and limped out of the action soon after.

Having taken the lead, the Hippos saw the game through to half-time with a real measure of control.

A second goal came early in the second half when Louis Grant rose highest in a crowded area to head home a Tom Perryman cross.

The home side hit back and then spurned a glorious chance of a second when they put a free-kick just wide.

Town boss Kev Blackwell sent on Andy Isaac and the sub provided a real spark. Indeed, it was Isaac who provided the assist for Conor Flanagan to fire Town into a 3-1 lead.

Fittingly, the lively Isaac then got just reward for his impressive cameo when he thumped the ball home to give the Hippos the winning margin their all-round display deserved.

Amongst what were some good individual performances, teenager Jack de Winton was again excellent in the left back berth where, in addition to fulfilling his defensive duties, he was very assured and composed on the ball when going forward.

However, in terms of the Man of the Match award, decided by Joe Gamblin from Chippy Joes, it went to Conor Flanagan, who worked tirelessly and showed real quality on the ball and gave a very mature performance.

Town boss Kev Blackwell was delighted with his side’s efforts. He said: “The players are showing great commitment and spirit and, as I had hoped would happen, they are growing in confidence on a game by game basis.”

The Hippos boss continued: “I would like to thank my friend and management partner, Nick ‘Oggy’ Ogden.

As a team, we are far from the finished article and we know we have a lot of hard work to do, but it does feel we are on the right path and Nick’s part in that cannot be underestimated, and it most certainly isn’t by me.”

The midweek draw at Bovey Tracey (where Town became the first side to deny the South Devon all three points in a home game this campaign) was achieved by another polished all-round show with goals from Ben Ede and substitute Rikki Pitter.

Town are back in action tonight (Wednesday) when they are at Sidmouth Town for an East Devon derby (7.30pm).

Tonight’s opposition appointed Kevin Tooze to take over as manager at Manstone Land and the new boss saw his charges beat Axminster Town 4-2.

On Saturday another large crowd is expected at Mountbatten Park to see the Hippos take on table-topping Elmore (3pm).
