Budleigh Salterton claimed their first win of the season and booked a berth in the next round of the Throgmorton Devon Premier Cup, winning 3-1 at North Devon League side Torrington, writes Alan Beer.

What made the success all the more respectable was that the Robins, making their third trip to North Devon in as many weekends, were without suspended duo Darren Everest and Karl Riddell, but Ross James and Luke Iddon, with youngsters Guy Laverock and Jack England formed a new-look back line that did very well in front of regular glovesman Alan Doble.

Budleigh made a confident start and were a whisker away from a 15th minute lead with a John Nott shot being tipped round the post by the Torrington goalkeeper.

The Robins continued to dominate proceedings and it was no more than they deserved when Nott provided the assist for teenager Ethan Slater to fire home with eight minutes in the half remaining.

The home side hit back, scoring at the second attempt from a corner, although the set-piece was a fortuitous one for the hosts as the ball had clearly gone out for a throw-in down near the corner flag!

After the break the Robins’ dominance increased. However, they were unable to find a second goal with Nott seeing a shot turned onto a post, and Slater also saw the woodwork keep out his effort before, with five minutes of normal time left, Nott again turned provider, this time providing the assist for Johnny Hitchcock to restore the Robins’ lead.

Three minutes later it was a case of game, set and match as Slater scored his second.

This Saturday (October 13) Budleigh make a fourth successive trip up the North Devon Link Road when they travel north to meet Appledore (3pm).

Both Everest and Riddell are available again having completed their respective suspensions.
