Sidmouth Town completed a South West Peninsula League Eastern Division double with an Easter 5-2 success over Budleigh Salterton at their Greenway Lane home.

Having beaten the Robins’ 4-0 on Boxing Day, the Vikings made the short trip to Budleigh confident – but far from complacent - as the home side still need points to fend off the threat of the only side to sit below them in the table, Exwick Villa in the battle to avoid dropping back into Macron League football.

Town started well. They were quick to get the ball down on the ground and passed it with pace and precision.

However, it was the home side that fashioned the games first chance with an instinctive shot from Callum Shipton deflected up and over the Town bar.

At the other end of the pitch Town continued to probe and it was no surprise when, in the 10th minute, Cameron Vere and Connor Swingler played a neat one-two on the edge of the area from where Swingler hit a crisp left-foot shot that beat Alan Doble in the home goal.

Four minutes later the lead was doubled when Ben Farrington delivered a teasing ball into the home penalty area and it was met by a powerful header from Jonny Holding who was able to celebrate his first Vikings goal since his switch from Alphington the month before.

The home side got a goal back in the 37th minute with mark Lever heading a left wing cross back across the face of goal where Hugo Demetre headed it past Town glovesman Dec Lines.

The goal stung Town into an immediate response and the two-goal margin was instantly restored when Glenn Gould headed home a corner to score his first goal for the club since joining the Vikings in February.

With almost the final kick off the first half, Budleigh’s Shipton was denied when his 25-yard free-kick cannoned back into play off the crossbar.

Town made a sluggish start to the second, but once they did find their feet after the break, Farrington, Gould and Holding took charge and, in the 65th minute, the lead was increased further when Gould send Cameron Vere clear and he calmly slotted past Doble to make it 4-1.

Budleigh, to their credit, dug deep and came back and were rewarded for their dogged determination when Rafael Catille-Jos found himself in the penalty area and squared the ball for substitute Adam Wilkinson. The teenagers aw his well-struck shot hit the post, but it came out to the supporting Karl Riddell who tucked it home.

Five minutes from time another Wilkinson effort – this time a shot from fully 30-yards – again beat keeper Lines, but once more the frame of the goal denied the teenage striker a goal.

With almost the final kick of the game Sidmouth Town completed the scoring when Vere broke the offside trap and then once again placing past the helpless Doble.

Sidmouth From: Lines, Binion, Newbery, Pointing, Skelton, Farrington (c), Gould, Holding, Bodor, Vere and Swingler. Used subs: Small, Raistrick and Sam Jones. Unused: Jarrett.

Star man - Glenn Gould.
