Robins climb higher

17:21 04 December 2012

Bideford extended their run of Southern League success to seven points out of nine in their last three matches – taking them five steps off the bottom of the Premier Division table.

A well earned point in a 1-1 draw with fifth-placed Barwell was just reward for a 10 hour round trip to Leicestershire.

Bideford had the better of the opening half. While Barwell struggled against their solid central defence of Jack Furzer, Aaron Harper-Penman and Dominic Rivans, the Robins created the better chances, with Sean Downing firing just over and Matt Andrew denied only by the home keeper.

With an hour gone Bideford took the lead. Richard Groves, recalled in midfield in place of the unavailable Matt Bye, whipped in a free kick for Squire to head the opening goal.

But Barwell responded almost instantly when Matt West followed up to score after a fine initial save from Bideford keeper Paul Hider.

Bideford continued to defend solidly, with Nick Barker, Matt Hockley and Richard Groves all excelling and were rewarded with only their second away point of the season.

The Robins now face potentially two of their toughest fixtures in succession, meeting the two teams filling the top two places in their next two league games – at home to leaders Hemel Hemspstead this Saturday, followed a week later with a trip to currently unbeaten Leamington.
