Robinettes suffer Devon Cup semi-final heartbreak

Budleigh Salterton ladies’ attempt to reach the final of the Graddon Vending Devon Women’s Supplementary Cup for the second successive season ended in disappointment as they were beaten 2-1 after extra-time by hosts Axminster Town, writes SpursTom.

The home side had clearly strengthened their squad since the two teams had met in the opening game of this season’s Devon Women’s League Division One campaign.

Neither team could break the other down during a closely contested first half that ended 0-0.

After the break, the home side built pressure and the deadlock was broken by a slick finish from the dangerous Graziely Esperanca.

The Robins hit back with substitute Rachael Dunn impressing at right back while Julie Soper made an excellent debut in a midfield berth. It was no more than the Robins deserved when Haley Worsley levelled things up.

In the closing stages Axminster Town so nearly won it, but were denied by a wonderful save from Budleigh goalkeeper Maddie Walsh and so the tie went into extra-time. The extra half hour proved to be most entertaining with the ball zipping from end to end, but, once again, defences held sway and at half-time in extra-time the teams were still locked at 1-1.

Chances came – and went – at both ends of the pitch before, from a late corner kick, Bincha Rocha headed the home side into the final.
