Having been knocked out in the quarter-final of the Supplementary Cup the previous week, First Division outfit Budleigh Salterton Ladies are now also out of the Westward Developments Devon Women’s League, League Cup, after a 5-2 defeat to Premier Division side University of Exeter, writes SpursTom.

The Robinettes went into the match without some of their normal starting eleven, including leading scorer Amy Salter, who was rested, but came along to run the line.

Manager Dan and his assistant decided to use this match to take a closer look at some of the fringe players and the newer recruits.

On a cold windy afternoon his team coped reasonably well, taking the lead through Jen Cordwell. The students levelled, but Budleigh soon regained the lead with a goal from Emma (Hayley) Worsley.

Back came the students, though, and the contest was all square at 2-2 at the break. The students made an impressive start to the second half and caught the Robinettes’ defence napping as they scored in the first minute to lead 3-2. Once again, the students laid siege to the Budleigh goal and the pressure began to build. However, the outstanding Maddie Walsh in the Budleigh goal came up with endless heroics to keep them at arm’s length. Sadly, though, she was eventually beaten twice more, and was pipped for the team’s Player of the Match by Emma H Worsler. Whilst the young students journey onwards in the cup, the Robinettes can concentrate on challenging for the Division One title.
