Exmouth Town are through to the second round of the FA Vase following a very hard earned victory over a gritty and resilient Elburton Villa, writes John Dibsdall.

Whilst the Southern Road pitch was largely unaffected by ‘Storm Callum’, the strong swirling wind made life difficult and to their credit both sides tried to play constructive football.

Town had the first chance to score on 14 minutes when Aarron Denny was brought down in the area, but Nathan Cooper’s spot kick brought an excellent save from the visiting ‘keeper.

Any thoughts that Town would have an afternoon stroll similar to their 4-1 victory over the Villa on the opening day of the season were soon dispelled as the Plymouth based side struck the outside of the post and then the crossbar from an in-swinging corner in quick succession.

The deadlock was finally broken on 68 minutes. Karl Rickard and Mark Lever were introduced to the action as Town were about to take a corner. Denny took the set-piece and his well-flighted delivery was met by a glancing header from Ace High and, in the ensuing scramble at the far post Rickard was on hand to force the ball over the line from all of two feet with what his very first touch!

Town were now in control of the game and the visitors were restricted to long range efforts that never threatened the goal and an excellent cross from Denny was met by a superb header at the far post by Rickard on 86 minutes to ensure Town are one of the last 64 sides left in the competition.

Town are without a game this Saturday (October 20), but are in action tonight (Wednesday) when they travel to Saltash United who also had an excellent result in the Vase when they defeated Westbury United who boast a 100 per cent record in the Western League Premier Division.
