Archant

The Exmouth Netball League saw the much-anticipated top-of-the-table clash when defending champions Comets came up against fierce rivals Replay, writes Lucy Burch.

This was the fourth and final meeting of the pair for this particular season and they went into the contest with Comets leading 2-1 from the previous matches.

In a fast-paced start, Comets struck first thanks to some good attacking play and great shooting from Cara Monaghan and Tracey Abbott, but Replay gave as good as they got and, with a run of turnover ball, managed to end the first quarter holding a three goal lead.

The contest was so evenly matched throughout and both teams were producing some excellent centre court play.

Turnovers were happening all over the court and it was difficult to know which way the contest would go!

At the end of the second quarter, Replay had narrowly increased their lead to one of four goals and special mention must be made of the shift put in by Replay goalkeeper Michelle Fry, who made numerous interceptions and kept calm under the ever-increasing pressure from the Comets’ shooters.

At the end of the third quarter, Replay had extended their lead to a more comfortable margin of nine goals. Comets threw everything they had at reducing the deficit in the final quarter, but Replay were in no mood to lose their advantage and, when the final whistle was blown, it was Replay who emerged with the match honours thanks to a 57-50 score line.

The respective Player of the Match awards went to Jo Channing for Replay and Jill Hall for Comets.

Replay have one more match left in their campaign and if they win that match, being played this Thursday, they will sit top of the league for the first time.

Sidmouth 2nd XI opening bat Issac Thomas scored a superb unbeaten double century as the team chalked up an eighth straight C Division East win. In the same game fellow opener Anthony Griffiths (101) and number three bat Robbie Powell (102 not out) also scored centuries as the team racked up a whopping 443-1 against Budleigh Salterton 2nds. Over at Bradninch, Powell’s brother Dan, was five runs shy of his own three figures score – though he was put down four times – when he was out to a stunning catch. Despite it being a super Saturday for the 2nd XI, it proved to be a not so successful day for the 1st and 3rd XIs as they both lost their games.

In this week’s Sunday Facebook Sidmouth CC round-up we simply have to start with that extraordinary show at the Fortfield by the 2nd XI
