Players brawl at football match

Brawling footballers in Budleigh Salterton led to a match being abandoned last weekend.

And now charges of misconduct could be brought against some of the players on both sides.

Budleigh Salterton was leading Axminster Town 3-0 at Greenway Lane in their South West Peninsula League Eastern Division game when punch-ups forced the referee to halt the game after just 38 minutes.

The South West Peninsula League said the Devon County Football Association would decide whether to bring misconduct charges and only once that process was complete would a decision whether to replay the game be made.

Budleigh Salterton FC released the following statement: “The officials and management committee at Budleigh Salterton Football Club are extremely sorry that it was our club which became involved in an unsavoury incident which led the match referee to abandon the game after just 38 minutes.”

Axminster Town chairman Ray Self apologised to Budleigh FC and said: “You simply cannot condone what happened on the pitch on Saturday. No matter what any perceived provocation may, or may not be, the simple fact is that what went on went way beyond what can be deemed acceptable behaviour on, or off, a football pitch.”
