Exmouth United Under-11s were 2-1 winners when they met St Martin’s in an Exeter and District Youth League game that was played out on a wet and windy Saturday morning, writes Nic Lopez.

Despite the testing conditions, both teams made bright starts, something that will have pleased home manager Carl Farr, who had been concerned that his team had take a while to get going in their early season matches.

It was the visitors who scored first with a shot from the edge of the area finding its way under the diving Noah Brown in the United goal.

After falling behind the United response was very good and, after a series of near things they levelled with a delightful pass from Louis Farr released Dom Lawrence who showed the St Martins back line a clean set of heels before drilling the ball home to leave honours even at half-time.

After the break both teams looked to play on the front foot. St Martins gave as good as they got and it needed some fine goalkeeping from Brown and some excellent defending from Alfie Yabsley that denied the visitors a second.

With the clock ticking down some slick passing ended with the ball at the feet of Lawrence who got away an early shot that beat then keeper, but came back off the upright only to fall to Crawford Pitt who had followed up well and gleefully tapped the ball into an empty net!

There was still time for St Martins to throw everything they had at looking for a second goal of their own, but United’s defence were again equal to all that was thrown at them and the final whistle blew to spark great celebrations from the United players who continue to sport a 100 per cent record this season with three wins from three games.

The United Man of the Match award was shared by Noah Brown and Alfie Yabsley.
