Pannell nets in his father’s final game as Budleigh boss

Archant

Budleigh Salterton went out of the Walter C Parsons Funeral Directors Cup, beaten 4-1 at Ilfracombe Town, but the three-goal margin of defeat was harsh on the Robins, who put in another battling display, playing their final match under boss John Pannell, writes Alan Beer.

It was Budleigh who made the brighter start, playing some confident passing football, and it was against the run of play that the home side opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a trade mark clinical finish from the prolific Sam Fox.

The Budleigh response was instant and, two minutes after being behind, they were soon level when a long throw found George Pannell on the edge of the area and he created enough space for himself to drill the ball into the back of the net. Ilfracombe were denied a second when Alan Doble made a splendid save to deny David Slade. For the remainder of the first half it was Budleigh who continued to dominate, but, typical of their lack of good fortune so far this season, with just a minute to go before the break, the ball fell kindly in the area for Fox to fire home. Six minutes into the second half and Budleigh could – indeed should – have been level! When the ball was swung into a crowded area Ross James climbed above everyone else, but instead of putting what was a free header into the back of the net his effort grazed the bar.

With 15 minutes remaining the otherwise excellent Doble spilled a cross from the left with the ball ending up in the net and, five minutes later, the contest was ended as Fox completed his hat-trick.

For the Robins, who play at home to University tonight (Wednesday), with kick-off at 7.30pm, George Pannell and Harry Gibbings had fine games. On Saturday, new Budleigh boss Matt Hughes takes his side to Torridgeside (3pm).
