One game beats the weather

16:24 27 November 2012

WHILE soggy pitches forced all about them to postpone their fixtures, Georgeham and Croyde Reserves and South Molton Reserves defied the weather to do Intermediate Two battle in the only North Devon Gazette Football League match of the weekend.

“The pitch was OK at 9am, but then it rained again and it was touch and go,” said Georgeham team manager Simon Clark. “I went out and forked the pitch and was joined by some of the players when they arrived. We forked quite a few parts. It was quite muddy, but there were no puddles. Neither side was going to abuse it and both teams wanted to go ahead,” he said.

Despite the conditions, Georgeham started at a canter, knocking in two goals in the first five minutes by Nick Shilleto and Dale Sawyer. But then they relaxed and South Molton’s top scorer Mitchell Wensley hit a sweet goal after 20 minutes and assistant manager Dave Read followed suit two minutes later to level the scoreline.

There were chances both ways before Kyle Savin put Georgeham in front again and they never looked back. After holding the 3-2 scoreline to half-time, Georgeham pushed steadily ahead after the break to win 6-2, with further goals by Dale Sawyer, Lee Holder and substitute Scott Adams.

South Molton’s man-of-the-match was Thomas Roode, who looks now to be pushing for a first team spot.

South Molton spokesman Dave Filer said: “South Molton did have chances, but nothing came of them. Full credit to Fred Saunders, the referee, who I think was the only person on the pitch not to have slipped over during the game. The pitch became very slipperly towards the end, but at least the game was played.”
