Honiton Golf Club’s Tuesday Mixed group went to Cricket St Thomas for their latest ‘Thursday Away Day’, writes Ann Desmoulins.

The weather was looking ominous in the morning, but the rain didn’t last long and the sun put in an appearance.

The format was a four-ball team event with any two scores to count. There were some good scores, but, as often happens, it was the last group out who took the honours. Not only that, they were the only group with one man and three ladies, as opposed to two men and two ladies.

So, congratulations to Linda Curtis, Hilda Hoepelman, Jan Portlock and Paul Ritchie with a super score of 88 points.

Only one behind, with 87 points, were Elizabeth Ward, Lesley Farley, John Northover and Bob Barnes.

Cherry Liell and Barry Rogers each took a prize for nearest the pin. The golf was followed by a very enjoyable two course meal.

The Tuesday competition last week was a Texas Scramble, with 28 taking part.

In first place, with the lowest net score of 61.8, were Steph Barnes, Cathy Uttley, Bob Barnes and Mike Delaney.

Second place, with a net 63.4, went to Elizabeth Ward, Linda Curtis, John Ward and Barry Rogers.

They were closely followed by Sue Ritchie, Vicki Rogers, Paul Ritchie and Max Pipe with net 63.6.

● Norman Barker was a past member and put his name to a trophy to be competed for by members of Honiton seniors who were also members of the Devon Men’s Veterans Golf Association (DMVGA).

It is a knockout competition for pairs, which is run through the summer season. Many fine names are on the trophy and this year the names of Phil Deacon and Peter Morgan will be added. Seventy-one people played and the long drives of the hot summer now seem a thing of the past!

The winners, with a score of 63.0, were Nigel Broadbent, Mike Delaney and Howard Pritchard.

Second place went to Dave Maggs, Tony Proudfoot and Tom Stanton with a nett 63.7, third were Alan Pollock, Peter Blake and Rod Armitage with a nett 65.9 and in fourth place, with a nett 66.9, were Bill Phillips, Phil Faulkner and Brian Bird.

Vic Wood must have thought Christmas had come early as he had the only two and won 45 balls, achieving it on the 12th.

● The Honiton ladies’ October Stableford turned out to be a sorry affair in the aftermath of the weekend storms.

Twenty-six ladies played in dank and soggy conditions, which made life difficult if you were attempting to put together a reasonable score.

However, some creditable scores were posted in spite of the conditions. The winner of the Silver Division was Olwen Eaton with 31 points on countback from second Linda Blundell and third was Vicki Rogers with 30.

Bronze One was won by Lesley Farley with a very good 36 points. Second, on countback, was Dot Grove with 32 and third was Chris Luttman.

Bronze Two was won by Cathy Pawley with 33 points, second was Cherry Liell with 32 and third, with 27, was Sheila Palmer.

Three ladies played the nine-hole Stableford, the winner being Sue Langdon with 15 points.
