Fixtures against local rivals are always friendly, but competitive, affairs and the opening match of the season this week for the Budleigh men saw a hard-fought encounter away against Maderia, writes David Roberts.

Whilst there was an overall 61-48 defeat over three rinks, there was a great 22-15 win for Peter Cooper, Mike Killoran, Brian Evans and David Tomlinson.

Losing up until the 15th end, the Budleigh bowlers clicked into gear scoring nine shots to their opponents’ one over the last six ends.

Tony Lim, Andrew Scudder, Paul Griffin and skip David Roberts got off to a slow start with nothing going their way before they hit a purple patch to hold the lead 10-8 at the 12th end and fought well to take two shots on the last end to earn a creditable 18-18 draw.

Jim Letten, Simon Weclavek, Don Huish and John Dill came up against an in-form Maderia team and whilst playing some good shots found it difficult to keep the scoreboard moving and lost out 26-8.

Nevertheless, to come home with anything from this fixture is always an achievement for the club.

A Budleigh team entertained local neighbours Sidmouth over two rinks in a mixed friendly and ran out overall 35-20 winners.

Ann Vincent, Simon Weclavek, Mike Shaw and skip John Dill got off to a great start, winning 16-4 after nine ends and going on to take the rink 21-15.

In a close encounter on rink two, Marion Lacey, Mike Killoran, Gerry Roberts and Joan Shaw made a late comeback after taking an early lead, but just missed out, losing 15-14.

The Budleigh ladies took three rinks to Maderia and found the opposition to be on top form as they suffered a heavy loss, beaten on two of the three rinks, but there was some joy for the rink of Ann Vincent, Lilian Grainger, Dawn Graham and Myra Furminger, who secured a narrow 18-15 success.
